While shopping for lighting fixtures this weekend, I came across an old classic at a designer vintage store, the Artichoke Lamp. Designed by Poul Henningsen, a new large one at Design Within Reach will run you $9,000. If that's a little out of your budget, Ikea has a comparable lighting fixture in their Pendant Lamps Series called the Knappa, seen below.

The Knappa obviously doesn't have the pizzaz of the Artichoke, but at just $24.99, it's a heck of a lot easier on the wallet!

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts will be wrapping up its Papermade Modernism Exhibition Friday, September 29. If you live in the area, it definitely looks to be something worth checking out if haven't already. They write on their website, "While modernism has been examined in extensive detail, papermade objects seldom receive their due credit. Yet the ingenious use of a rather delicate medium has resulted in a remarkable array of two- and three-dimensional works. This exhibition includes furniture, lamps, vases, and sculptures by artists such as Frank Gehry, Isamu Noguchi, Red Grooms, and Charles and Ray Eames, among others".

Once I walked into a West Elm, found the perfect credenza only to find that they only made it in chocolate. When I asked why it didn't come in other colors, I got a very rude response about how chocolate furniture makes up about 80% of West Elm's sales. Shocking, because I think it is by far the gaudiest furniture I have ever seen, but that's just me. The good news is, aside from the bearable blonde furniture they carry, West Elm has created a new line of "acorn" furniture, very mid-century modern, sleek looking peices. Check it out, and do yourself a favor - stay away from the chocolate furniture. Ew. West Elm

Ok, so after the last useless vase blog, I was determined to find something else on this great website, Tart, and I came across these 3 floor vases, made of a fiberglass covered by laquer. I do believe they can hold water, but, I also believe that I could never afford them at a sticker price of $835.00. Oh well, I tried.

Made from laquerware, these beautifully designed vases were found on the Tart website, (Table Art). Although easy on the eyes, these vases are not designed to hold water. I'm figuring this out as I write the blog, which is kind of dissapointing. Um, functionality isn't always key in modern design, but when you're making a vase, holding flowers and water should be included in the thought process. Hmm.

Well, look no further. Ian Maclean, located in Clevland, Ohio, specializes in custom wood and fabrication. He gives all of his work an "old world" attention to detail, which explains why he decided to re-fabricate the hairpin leg. The legs come in a cold rolled steel or stainless steel round bar look. He claims that he can take custom orders, a quote is what he'll give you. I'd have something nicer to say if it hadn't been 3 months since I got that quote, and no legs to be seen. A good friend turned me on to this website this morning, and I still haven't been able to get myself off of it. This highly addictive game of nothing but illustrations of child-like stick figures created to show great moments in art, history, film and more. Nelson was the director of design at Hermal Miller from 1946-1972, and it was here that he worked with other desginers such as Isamu Noguchi and Charles Eames.
